Jasper County, MO (August 21, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on Missouri Route 66 just west of Joplin left one driver with serious injuries Wednesday afternoon. The collision occurred around 3:53 p.m., approximately one mile west of the city, and was investigated by Trooper T.M. Royster of Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D.
According to the official report, the crash happened when a westbound 1998 Chevrolet Silverado failed to slow in time and rear-ended a 2025 Ford F-150 that was slowing down to make a turn. The impact totaled the Chevrolet and left its driver—identified as a 40-year-old man from Galena, KS—seriously injured.
Emergency responders transported the injured man to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin for treatment. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was also found to be uninsured. The driver of the Ford F-150, a 30-year-old man from Philadelphia, PA, was properly restrained and did not require medical transport. His vehicle sustained only minor damage and was driven from the scene.
The Silverado was towed by Rosenberg Towing. The crash remains under investigation.
We extend our hopes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured driver.
Rear-End Crashes on Missouri Highways
Rear-end collisions, like the one that occurred on MO-66 near Joplin, are among the most common and preventable types of crashes—especially when they involve vehicles slowing to turn. These incidents are often the result of driver inattention, following too closely, or impaired reaction times. In rural or transitional zones outside city limits, such crashes can quickly become severe due to higher speeds and fewer traffic controls.
In this case, the seriousness of the injury was compounded by two key factors: the lack of seat belt use and the absence of insurance coverage. Seat belts are one of the most effective tools in reducing injury severity in crashes, and not wearing one can dramatically increase the risk of trauma—especially in older vehicles with fewer safety features.
Drivers who fail to carry insurance not only risk legal penalties but also jeopardize their ability to access compensation for medical bills and vehicle loss. Victims of these crashes often face a long recovery journey, both physically and financially.
