Jasper County, TX (August 23, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision on US Hwy 190 in Jasper County left a 7-year-old child with life-threatening injuries Friday afternoon. The incident occurred near County Rd 190 around 4:40 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. A 2022 Kia SUV reportedly rear-ended a 2010 Jeep SUV for unknown reasons. The impact caused the Kia to catch fire, leaving the vehicle engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived.
The young child, a passenger in the Kia, was airlifted to Texas Children’s Hospital in critical condition. The 16-year-old Jeep driver from Houston and the Kia’s driver were both transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department arrived to find the Kia ablaze and the Jeep severely damaged off the south side of the highway. They extinguished the fire and provided immediate aid until EMS teams took over. Jasper VFD supported traffic control while the highway remained closed for nearly an hour.
Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash. More details are expected as the Texas Department of Public Safety continues its review.
Our thoughts are with the young child and all others impacted by this tragic event.
Rear-End Collisions and Child Injury Risks in Texas
Rear-end accidents are among the most frequent types of collisions on Texas highways, but when they involve high speeds or mechanical failure, the consequences can be catastrophic. In this case, the fact that one vehicle caught fire and a child sustained critical injuries highlights just how devastating these incidents can be.
Highway 190, particularly through rural stretches of Jasper County, often sees mixed traffic speeds and limited visibility. These conditions can contribute to sudden slowdowns or failure to maintain safe following distances. Even a moment of inattention or miscalculation can lead to life-altering consequences.
Children are especially vulnerable in collisions due to their smaller size and reliance on adult safety measures. When injuries are severe enough to require airlift to specialized pediatric facilities, it often indicates internal trauma or burns that demand extensive care. Ensuring proper car seat usage and regularly checking child restraint systems is vital to minimizing injury risk.
The emotional and financial toll of such crashes is significant. Families may face prolonged hospital stays, rehabilitation, and legal or insurance challenges. For those affected by fiery or high-impact collisions, documenting the scene, preserving medical records, and seeking guidance on recovery resources is key to navigating the aftermath.
