Jefferson County, MO (July 22, 2025) – A collision on southbound Interstate 55 late on Monday night sent two people to area hospitals with moderate injuries. The incident took place at the 186-mile marker shortly after 9:00 p.m., involving two heavily damaged vehicles.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado became disabled in the third lane of I-55. A 2013 Chevrolet Cruze traveling southbound then collided with the stalled pickup truck. Both vehicles sustained total damage and were removed from the scene by Miner’s Towing Service.
Emergency crews from the Rock Township Ambulance District responded promptly, transporting the two injured drivers for medical care. The 25-year-old woman from Wood River, IL, who was driving the Cruze, was taken to Mercy Hospital Jefferson. The 69-year-old male driver of the Silverado, from House Springs, MO, was transported to Mercy Hospital South. Both individuals were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Assisting at the scene were multiple troopers and local responders. Traffic was impacted in the southbound lanes as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene.
We extend our best wishes for recovery to both individuals hurt in this collision.
Disabled Vehicle Crashes on Missouri Interstates
Crashes involving disabled vehicles on Missouri interstates present a serious hazard, especially in high-speed zones like I-55. Monday’s accident near the 186-mile marker serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that arise when stalled vehicles remain in travel lanes, whether due to mechanical failure, previous collisions, or other issues.
In this case, the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was stopped in lane three of southbound I-55 when the approaching Chevrolet Cruze struck it. Though both drivers were properly restrained, they still suffered moderate injuries, showing just how devastating stationary-object collisions can be, even with safety precautions in place.
Missouri’s interstates handle heavy volumes of traffic and often lack sufficient shoulder space in certain segments, which increases the likelihood of secondary collisions involving disabled vehicles. Drivers are encouraged to move off the roadway immediately if their vehicle becomes inoperable. If that isn’t possible, hazard lights should be activated, and occupants should exit to a safe location away from traffic if conditions allow.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of rapid response from law enforcement and medical services, as well as the need for increased public awareness about how to respond to roadside breakdowns. Drivers approaching known crash sites should reduce speed and change lanes when safe to do so, as part of Missouri’s “Move Over” law designed to protect both victims and responders.
For those injured in such events, it’s crucial to seek proper medical attention, understand your rights, and obtain assistance navigating insurance or legal matters related to the crash.
