Jones County, MS (August 12, 2025) – Two adults and three young children were injured on Friday afternoon in a serious head-on collision on Summerland Road in the Hebron Community. According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, the crash involved two vehicles, one driven by a single adult female and the other by an adult female accompanied by three children under the age of five.
All five individuals were transported by EMServ Ambulance Service to South Central Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. Officials noted that, despite the severity of the collision, all occupants were in stable condition upon arrival at the hospital.
Calhoun Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Scott Rushing, who also serves as a registered emergency medical responder, credited proper restraint use and correctly installed child safety seats for preventing more severe outcomes. “Looking at this accident and their condition, these injuries should have been worse,” Rushing stated.
Authorities reiterated the importance of seat belts for adults and age- and weight-appropriate safety or booster seats for children. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department stressed that correct restraint usage not only saves lives and reduces injury severity but also ensures compliance with state law.
Residents in need of assistance with proper car seat installation are encouraged to visit EMServ’s certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this collision, and we wish them a full recovery.
Head-On Collisions and Safety Restraints in Mississippi
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents due to the combined speed and force of two vehicles colliding directly. On rural roads like Summerland Road, factors such as narrow lanes, limited shoulders, and curves can increase the likelihood of such incidents.
Mississippi crash data consistently shows that the use of seat belts and child safety restraints dramatically improves survivability in severe collisions. Properly installed car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury to infants by 71% and to toddlers by 54%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This incident in Jones County serves as a reminder that safety restraints are a critical line of defense in a crash. Parents and caregivers should ensure that children are always secured in a car seat or booster seat suited to their age, height, and weight, and that those seats are installed according to manufacturer instructions.
