Kanawha County, WV (September 4, 2025) – A driver was hospitalized Wednesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on Interstate 64 West near South Charleston. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. during rush hour and caused major traffic congestion in the area, according to the Charleston Police Department.
Authorities say the semi-truck was unable to stop in time due to traffic buildup. In an attempt to avoid a full-speed collision, the truck driver attempted a lane change—but in doing so, sideswiped a nearby vehicle. The impact caused the smaller vehicle to flip over.
Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene. The driver of the flipped vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported, and police confirmed that the semi-truck did not overturn.
The crash led to delays on I-64 West for a period of time, but traffic had resumed normal flow by mid-morning, according to West Virginia 511 cameras.
We send our best wishes to the injured driver and hope for a swift and complete recovery.
Semi-Truck Crashes and Interstate Risks in West Virginia
Crashes involving commercial trucks are among the most dangerous incidents on major interstates like I-64—especially during rush hour. In this case, the semi’s inability to stop in congested traffic and the resulting sideswipe led to a vehicle rollover, which often carries significant injury risk.
Rollover crashes are traumatic events. The sudden inversion of a vehicle can cause head injuries, spinal trauma, and internal damage—especially if seatbelts fail or airbags do not deploy as intended. Even when victims escape with non-life-threatening injuries, recovery can be prolonged and emotionally difficult.
For drivers commuting through areas like South Charleston, the combination of high traffic volume and the presence of large trucks is a daily reality. While commercial drivers are trained to respond to changing conditions, even experienced operators can face difficulty stopping quickly—especially in narrow lanes, downhill sections, or during lane merges.
This crash is also a reminder of how quickly a chain-reaction incident can develop during peak traffic hours. One moment of delayed braking or poor visibility can result in a serious accident with multiple vehicles and widespread delays.
Truck crash victims often deal with added layers of complexity, including navigating multiple insurance companies, handling commercial liability, and dealing with property damage that may not be easily repaired.
Authorities are expected to review dashcam footage, witness statements, and vehicle data logs as part of the ongoing investigation. Findings could lead to additional safety measures or inform future traffic control strategies along I-64.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a crash involving a commercial truck, it’s important to seek guidance as soon as possible to protect your rights and recovery options.
