Kauai, HI (September 23, 2025) – Two passengers remain hospitalized in critical condition following a serious single-vehicle crash late Sunday night on Hulemalu Rd, according to the Kauai Police Department.
The collision occurred around 11:30 p.m. just east of the Ha’iku Rd intersection. Authorities reported that a 2015 white Nissan multi-purpose vehicle, carrying four occupants, was traveling eastbound when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a large tree.
Emergency responders transported two passengers to Wilcox Medical Center with critical injuries. The driver, identified as a minor, along with another passenger, were also injured but later released after treatment.
Police confirmed that the crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine all contributing factors.
Our thoughts are with the two individuals still in critical condition, and we hope for their recovery.
Single-Vehicle Collisions in Hawaii
Crashes involving only one vehicle, such as Sunday’s incident on Hulemalu Rd, account for a significant portion of Hawaii’s serious injury accidents. When vehicles leave the roadway and strike fixed objects, like trees or utility poles, the force of impact can be devastating—particularly for passengers who may not be shielded as effectively as the driver.
Roadways such as Hulemalu Rd, with their sharp curves and limited lighting, pose unique challenges at night. Inexperience, speed, or unfamiliarity with the road can all contribute to loss of control. In this case, the involvement of a minor driver raises further concern, as younger drivers statistically face higher risks of error in challenging roadway conditions.
Critical injuries resulting from collisions often mean extended hospital stays, rehabilitation, and uncertainty for victims and their families. Beyond the immediate medical challenges, the emotional and financial strain of such crashes can last for months or years.
This crash is also a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving practices, particularly at night and on Kauai’s narrow, winding roads. Community members continue to emphasize roadway safety, especially in areas where high-risk curves have been identified.
