Ketchikan, AK (September 5, 2025) – A tragic accident in downtown Ketchikan claimed the life of a pedestrian and left several others injured on Thursday morning after an SUV jumped a curb and plunged into Ketchikan Creek near the Centennial Building parking lot.
According to city officials, the crash occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. when the SUV veered off the roadway, struck a pedestrian, then broke through a fence before falling into roughly five feet of water. The pedestrian, identified as a 57-year-old woman from Auburn, Indiana, was pushed into the creek by the vehicle. She was transported to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV was rescued from the creek and remains in critical condition. Two additional people were hospitalized with injuries, including a civilian who was hurt while assisting in rescue efforts. Two more civilians were treated and released after jumping into the creek to aid those involved.
The Ketchikan Fire Department’s swift water rescue team, along with police and Coast Guard personnel, responded to the scene. Rescue crews worked to pull the SUV from the creek Thursday afternoon, while the Coast Guard monitored for potential water contamination. Portions of the Creek Street boardwalk remain closed as the investigation continues into why the SUV left the roadway.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the pedestrian who lost her life, and we wish strength and recovery to all who were injured.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Vehicle Collisions in Alaska
The deadly crash in downtown Ketchikan underscores the vulnerability of pedestrians in areas where heavy vehicle traffic intersects with high foot traffic. Downtown districts like Creek Street attract both residents and thousands of seasonal visitors, heightening the risks when vehicles lose control.
While pedestrian crashes are less common in smaller Alaskan communities compared to large cities, the consequences can be just as devastating. Poor separation between vehicles and walkways, crowded conditions during tourist season, and sudden driver medical or mechanical issues can all play a role in serious collisions.
This incident also highlights the importance of community response. Swift action by Ketchikan Fire’s rescue team and bystanders helped prevent further tragedy. However, the outcome reflects how quickly a single vehicle can turn a busy public space into a site of loss and injury.
Victims of pedestrian crashes, as well as their families, often face overwhelming medical and emotional challenges. In fatal cases, loved ones may also face funeral costs and the abrupt loss of companionship and support. Accessing accurate crash reports and connecting with local resources is critical in navigating these difficult times.
