Micromobility Safety Concerns on Florida Roadways
This fatal crash in Key Largo brings renewed attention to the growing presence of electric scooters and other micromobility vehicles on Florida’s streets and sidewalks. While scooters offer convenience and accessibility, their use in areas not designed for motorized traffic—like sidewalks—can increase the risk of severe or fatal accidents.
In this case, the scooter rider was traveling in the opposite direction of traffic on a sidewalk and collided with a vehicle turning onto a major highway. These kinds of sidewalk-travel conflicts are especially dangerous at intersections, where visibility is limited and turning drivers may not anticipate fast-moving riders approaching from unexpected directions.
Unfortunately, electric scooter-related fatalities have risen nationwide as use has increased in both urban and coastal communities. Florida law varies by municipality regarding where electric scooters can operate, but many collisions occur at points where rider routes cross with vehicles, often without dedicated lanes or signals to guide interactions.
Tragedies like this underscore the importance of improved infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and legal clarity around micromobility use. They also highlight the need for both drivers and scooter users to remain hyper-aware at all intersections, particularly in mixed-use areas like U.S. 1 through the Florida Keys.
