Kootenai County, ID (September 23, 2025) – One person was killed and another seriously injured in a tragic ATV crash Saturday night in the Coeur d’Alene National Forest. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM near the Horsehaven Airstrip on Forest Service Road 209, just east of the City of Coeur d’Alene.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), the ATV driver failed to navigate a turn on the forest road and went off a cliff. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult passenger riding on the ATV was found with serious injuries.
Emergency response was complicated by dry conditions in the forest. Life Flight initially responded but could not land due to heavy dust kicked up by the helicopter’s rotors. Kootenai County Fire and Rescue (KCFR) arrived on the scene shortly after and helped control dust by watering down the landing zone. This allowed Life Flight to successfully transport the injured passenger to Kootenai Health, where they remain in serious condition.
KCSO reported that alcohol and drugs are suspected to be contributing factors in the crash. The names of the victims have not been released pending family notification and further investigation.
Dangers of Off-Road Vehicle Use in Forested Terrain
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) offer recreational enjoyment and utility in remote areas, but they also come with significant risks—especially on rugged or poorly lit terrain like Forest Service roads in the Coeur d’Alene National Forest. Saturday’s fatal crash is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a recreational outing can turn tragic, particularly when speed, visibility, or substance use are factors.
Riding after dark increases danger due to limited visibility, and sharp turns on forest roads can be deceptive and deadly. Forest Service Road 209, where the crash occurred, is known for its remote location, uneven terrain, and steep drop-offs. In such environments, even a small miscalculation can have fatal consequences.
ATV safety is a growing concern in North Idaho, where outdoor recreation is popular year-round. Protective gear, including helmets and visibility gear, as well as strict avoidance of alcohol and drug use, are essential to reducing the risk of severe or fatal crashes.
In cases like this one, emergency response becomes more complex due to location, terrain, and weather conditions. The actions of KCFR in creating a safe landing zone highlight the difficulty and importance of coordinated rescue efforts in rural or off-grid areas.
