La Place, IL (September 18, 2025) – A fatal collision involving two semi-trucks occurred Wednesday morning at the intersection of Illinois Route 32 and U.S. Route 36, just south of La Place. The crash claimed the life of 63-year-old Michael B. Griffith of Mt. Zion.
Illinois State Police reported that the incident took place around 10:45 AM when a semi-truck traveling on IL 32 entered the intersection. Its trailer was struck by another semi traveling along US 36, causing a devastating impact.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported both drivers to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Griffith succumbed to his injuries after arrival. The second driver’s condition has not been released.
The crash forced the closure of the intersection for several hours, with traffic being rerouted until approximately 4:30 PM as investigators worked to clear the scene and document evidence.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Michael B. Griffith during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Truck Accidents in Illinois and Intersection Dangers
The deadly crash near La Place is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by heavy commercial vehicles at high-speed intersections. Both Illinois Route 32 and U.S. Route 36 are key corridors for freight traffic, and intersections like this one can quickly become sites of tragedy when timing, visibility, or speed are compromised.
Collisions involving two semis often result in catastrophic damage due to the size and momentum of the vehicles involved. In this case, the trailer of one truck was struck at an angle that likely left little time or space for evasive action. The loss of Michael B. Griffith underscores the human cost of such incidents and the importance of continued improvements in traffic control and safety enforcement at rural intersections.
Fatal crashes at crossroads like IL 32 and US 36 often point to challenges with sightlines, signaling, or driver misjudgment. While the full investigation is still underway, commercial drivers and local motorists alike can take this as a reminder to reduce speed and proceed with heightened caution at all rural junctions—particularly those involving major truck routes.
For families who lose loved ones in trucking accidents, the road to healing involves more than emotional recovery. There may be questions about liability, insurance coverage, and legal rights—matters that require support and experienced guidance.
