Lafayette County, MO (August 26, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash early on Monday morning on westbound Interstate 70 that left one person injured and caused significant damage to a passenger vehicle. The collision occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. near the 42.6-mile marker in Lafayette County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2016 Volvo VNL semi-truck and a 2007 Honda Accord. Authorities say the Volvo experienced a tire blowout while traveling westbound. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver of the Honda Accord attempted to maneuver around the truck but ended up striking the rear of the towed unit. After the impact, the semi veered off the left side of the roadway and collided with a cable barrier.
The Honda Accord, driven by a 23-year-old male from Eureka, MO, was totaled and towed from the scene by Walker Tire. A 23-year-old female passenger from St. Louis, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was transported by Higginsville EMS to Centerpoint Hospital for treatment.
The 46-year-old male driver of the Volvo, from Carrollton, IL, was not injured and was able to drive the vehicle from the scene.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident and assess contributing factors related to the commercial vehicle’s equipment failure.
We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to the passenger injured in this incident.
Tire Blowouts and Rear-End Crashes in Missouri
Crashes involving commercial trucks, such as the one reported in Lafayette County, can quickly turn dangerous when mechanical failures occur at highway speeds. Tire blowouts in particular pose a serious threat, as they often result in a sudden loss of control or force the vehicle to swerve unexpectedly, leaving little room for nearby drivers to react.
In this case, the Honda Accord driver took evasive action but was unable to avoid striking the rear of the truck’s towed unit, resulting in a crash that led to injury and significant vehicle damage. While the commercial vehicle ended up hitting a cable barrier, the impact on the passenger vehicle was far more severe.
Passenger cars are at a significant disadvantage in any collision involving a tractor-trailer due to size and weight disparities. Even at lower speeds, the risk of injury increases substantially when smaller vehicles make contact with heavy equipment or cargo areas.
This incident highlights the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, especially for commercial carriers, and the dangers of nighttime highway travel. Low visibility, fatigue, and limited reaction time all play a role in nighttime crashes. Drivers are urged to maintain safe following distances and stay alert to shifting conditions, particularly near large trucks.
For individuals involved in highway collisions with commercial vehicles, prompt medical care, documentation, and access to expert support are key to a successful recovery.
