Lake County, FL (August 25, 2025) – A 51-year-old man from Astatula lost his life early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash near Umatilla, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The fatal accident occurred just after 1:15 AM on County Road 450, near Babb Rd.
Troopers reported that the man was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 westbound on C.R. 450 when he failed to navigate a curve in the roadway. The pickup truck veered off the pavement, entered the tree line, and began rotating before the right side of the vehicle collided with a tree.
FHP investigators noted that the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was partially ejected from the vehicle due to the force of impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. No other occupants or vehicles were involved in the incident.
The crash remains under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who tragically lost his life in this incident.
Single-Vehicle Crashes and Seat Belt Safety in Florida
This devastating crash in Lake County highlights a recurring and preventable factor in many Florida roadway fatalities: failure to wear a seat belt. In single-vehicle collisions, especially those involving curves or high-speed rural roads, a seat belt often makes the critical difference between survival and fatality.
In this case, the driver’s failure to negotiate a curve on C.R. 450—a winding, tree-lined roadway near Babb Rd—resulted in a violent off-road impact. The force of the crash caused the truck to rotate and strike a tree, ejecting the unbelted driver from the cabin. According to FHP and national traffic safety data, partial or full ejection from a vehicle drastically increases the risk of death or severe trauma.
Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) continues to stress the importance of seat belt use in all seating positions and all vehicle types. In 2024 alone, nearly half of all traffic fatalities in the state involved unrestrained occupants. Many of these occurred during nighttime hours on less-traveled roads, where speed and curves combine to create hazardous conditions.
Rural routes like County Road 450 often lack lighting, have inconsistent shoulder space, and offer limited visibility—making even routine nighttime driving more dangerous. When combined with driver fatigue or loss of control in a curve, these elements often lead to fatal rollovers or side impacts.
