Lakewood, NJ – Officer Critically Injured in High-Speed Crash at Cedar Bridge Ave & New Hampshire Ave

April 21, 2025

Lakewood, NJ (April 21, 2025) – A Lakewood police officer is in critical condition following a violent two-vehicle collision that occurred early Saturday morning, after a pickup truck driver ran a red light at more than 100 mph, officials reported.

Emergency responders from Lakewood Fire and Rescue quickly arrived on the scene at the intersection of Cedar Bridge Ave and New Hampshire Ave just after midnight on April 19. The officer, whose name has not yet been released, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel for advanced treatment.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, 20-year-old Edwin J. Ramirez-Carranza of Lakewood was behind the wheel of a pickup truck traveling north on New Hampshire Ave when he blew through a red light at an alarming speed of 106 mph. Investigators also noted that Ramirez-Carranza was holding his cell phone at the time of the collision—an act that may have significantly contributed to the crash.

The officer’s vehicle, which was heading eastbound on Cedar Bridge Ave, was violently struck by the pickup, causing extensive damage. Ramirez-Carranza has since been taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges related to the crash, including reckless driving, assault by auto, and potentially more, pending the officer’s condition.

Authorities have not released further details on the ongoing investigation but emphasized that speed and distracted driving played major roles in the incident. Our thoughts are with the injured officer and their loved ones during this difficult time.

High-Speed Crashes and Distracted Driving in New Jersey

This heartbreaking crash in Lakewood sheds light on two of the most dangerous behaviors on New Jersey roadways—excessive speeding and distracted driving. The combination of both, especially in high-traffic intersections like Cedar Bridge Ave and New Hampshire Ave, often leads to catastrophic outcomes.

Driving at 106 mph, particularly in an urban or suburban zone, removes nearly all opportunities for corrective action in the event of a mistake. Add to that the use of a handheld device while driving, and the risks become even more severe. According to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes across the state, despite ongoing public safety campaigns and strict enforcement laws.

This case also brings additional concern due to the victim being a law enforcement officer, individuals who regularly put themselves at risk to protect public safety. Incidents involving first responders often lead to broader discussions about traffic enforcement, emergency protections, and stricter penalties for reckless driving.

As this investigation unfolds, the community must remain engaged in conversations about responsible driving behavior. High-speed and distracted driving incidents are entirely preventable, and each tragedy underscores the urgent need for awareness, education, and accountability.
