Lakewood, NJ (April 21, 2025) – A Lakewood police officer is in critical condition following a violent two-vehicle collision that occurred early Saturday morning, after a pickup truck driver ran a red light at more than 100 mph, officials reported.
Emergency responders from Lakewood Fire and Rescue quickly arrived on the scene at the intersection of Cedar Bridge Ave and New Hampshire Ave just after midnight on April 19. The officer, whose name has not yet been released, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel for advanced treatment.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, 20-year-old Edwin J. Ramirez-Carranza of Lakewood was behind the wheel of a pickup truck traveling north on New Hampshire Ave when he blew through a red light at an alarming speed of 106 mph. Investigators also noted that Ramirez-Carranza was holding his cell phone at the time of the collision—an act that may have significantly contributed to the crash.
The officer’s vehicle, which was heading eastbound on Cedar Bridge Ave, was violently struck by the pickup, causing extensive damage. Ramirez-Carranza has since been taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges related to the crash, including reckless driving, assault by auto, and potentially more, pending the officer’s condition.
