Lamesa, TX (April 23, 2025) – A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of Dawson County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessie Perez on Wednesday while he was performing a traffic stop near W US 180 and N Ave V in Lamesa. The incident occurred when debris from a passing commercial vehicle struck the deputy during the stop.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the fatal incident happened in the line of duty and prompted a joint response from DPS troopers and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Perez, who had pulled over a vehicle at the time, was struck by roadway debris, leading to fatal injuries despite the immediate arrival of emergency medical services.
Authorities confirmed that the commercial vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, and an investigation is currently underway to identify the vehicle and driver responsible. The circumstances surrounding how the debris came loose or if any negligence was involved remain under review by state and local officials.
The entire Lamesa community, as well as law enforcement agencies across Texas, are mourning the loss of Deputy Perez. Officials emphasized the dangers law enforcement officers face while working roadside and called on the public to exercise greater awareness when approaching active traffic stops.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Jessie Perez during this incredibly difficult time.
Dangers of Roadside Duty for Law Enforcement
This devastating incident underscores the significant risks faced by law enforcement officers who conduct traffic stops and other duties along high-speed roadways. Despite numerous public awareness campaigns and laws such as Texas’s “Move Over, Slow Down” statute, officers remain vulnerable when vehicles pass too closely or fail to reduce speed.
Highways like US 180, especially near interchanges and local cross streets like N Ave V, can become hazardous environments for anyone operating outside of a vehicle. The dangers are multiplied when commercial trucks or larger vehicles are involved, as the speed and force of even minor debris can become lethal.
In the wake of Deputy Perez’s death, officials are urging all motorists to be more mindful and proactive. Drivers are reminded to always slow down and move over for emergency vehicles with flashing lights, whether it’s law enforcement, fire crews, or tow operators. These moments of courtesy and compliance with the law can save lives.
Communities across Dawson County and beyond are reflecting on this loss and renewing calls for greater protections and accountability. In recent years, Texas has taken steps to strengthen penalties for violations of move-over laws, yet enforcement alone isn’t enough. Public understanding and shared responsibility are essential to preventing future tragedies.
