Lansing, MI (April 3, 2025) – A high-speed police pursuit involving a suspected impaired driver ended in a violent two-car collision late Wednesday night in Lansing, sending three people to the hospital. According to reports from WLNS and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Cleveland Street.
The incident began when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The 48-year-old male driver from Mason failed to pull over and fled southbound on Business US-27, leading deputies into the city limits of Lansing. During the pursuit, the suspect ran a stop sign at Oakland Ave and struck another vehicle traveling through the intersection.
The collision resulted in injuries to all three individuals involved:
- The suspected driver and his 31-year-old female passenger, both in the fleeing vehicle, were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
- The 26-year-old female driver of the second vehicle, a Lansing resident, also sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported for medical evaluation.
Authorities say that alcohol and/or drug use, combined with excessive speed, were likely factors in the crash. Charges against the fleeing driver are expected following further investigation.
We extend our best wishes to all injured in this crash and hope for their complete and swift recovery.
The Dangers of DUI and Police Chase-Related Crashes
Wednesday night’s crash in Lansing highlights the dangerous—and often tragic—consequences of impaired driving and fleeing from law enforcement. The fleeing driver’s decision to ignore traffic laws and fail to stop for deputies placed multiple lives at risk and ended in a preventable collision.
Running a stop sign at high speed, especially during nighttime hours, is one of the most hazardous scenarios on urban roadways. In this case, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into an innocent driver who had no opportunity to avoid the collision.
DUI-involved crashes are a persistent issue in Michigan and nationwide. When combined with law enforcement pursuits, the dangers escalate significantly. According to national statistics, crashes resulting from police chases often result in serious injuries or fatalities—many involving bystanders or uninvolved motorists.
For victims like the 26-year-old woman injured in this incident, the consequences can be overwhelming: vehicle loss, medical expenses, time off work, and emotional trauma. It is critical for victims to receive medical care and legal guidance to ensure their rights and well-being are protected throughout the recovery process.
Law enforcement agencies continue to evaluate pursuit policies and prioritize public safety during traffic stops. However, the responsibility to drive safely—and sober—remains with every individual behind the wheel.
