LaPorte County, IN (September 21, 2025) – A 29-year-old man was killed Friday in a collision between a bicycle and a commercial vehicle in rural LaPorte County. The fatal incident occurred just before noon at the intersection of State Road 39 and County Road 900 North.
Authorities identified the victim as Mason Anderson of Chicago. According to investigators, Anderson was riding with a group of cyclists traveling south on the shoulder of SR 39 when a commercial vehicle began to pass them using the left lane. At the same time, Anderson attempted to make a left turn onto CR 900 North, crossing into the vehicle’s path.
Despite efforts by the driver to avoid the crash, Anderson struck the trailer portion of the commercial vehicle. Emergency responders arrived quickly but pronounced Anderson deceased at the scene.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash. No further information about the driver or the commercial vehicle has been released.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mason Anderson during this heartbreaking time.
Fatal Bicycle Crashes in Indiana
Cycling fatalities involving commercial vehicles—like the tragic incident on SR 39—are an unfortunate but growing concern in rural and semi-rural parts of Indiana. Bicyclists sharing the road with larger vehicles are at a significantly higher risk of severe or fatal injury due to size, speed, and visibility limitations.
State Road 39 is a common route for both recreational cyclists and commercial traffic, but its design and shoulder width may not always provide adequate safety for non-motorized users. When passing cyclists, commercial drivers are expected to maintain a safe distance and exercise extreme caution. However, scenarios involving left turns—especially by cyclists—create complex moments of shared road usage where timing and visibility can mean the difference between safety and disaster.
In this case, Mason Anderson’s decision to turn left as the vehicle was overtaking the group created a tragic intersection of movement that resulted in a fatal impact. While the commercial driver reportedly attempted to avoid the collision, the circumstances are still under review to determine whether all appropriate safety protocols were followed.
Families affected by fatal bicycle crashes often face a painful and complex aftermath, involving not only grief and loss but also legal and insurance hurdles. These situations can become even more complicated when commercial vehicles are involved, as federal regulations and liability questions may be at play.
As the investigation continues, this tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the need for increased safety measures on shared roads, better cyclist awareness training for commercial drivers, and community infrastructure improvements that prioritize all roadway users.
