Las Vegas, NV (February 7, 2025) – Authorities are actively searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a bicyclist in east Las Vegas late Thursday night.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), the crash occurred around 11:10 p.m. on Stewart Ave, east of Pecos Rd. Investigators believe the bicyclist was riding westbound in the “storage lane,” adjacent to the outer travel lane, when a silver mid-2000s Toyota Camry, also traveling west, veered out of its lane and struck the cyclist.
The driver of the Camry failed to stop and continued westbound without rendering aid. The bicyclist, identified as a 50-year-old Las Vegas man, was transported to University Medical Center (UMC), where he later succumbed to his injuries.
This incident marks the 24th traffic-related fatality within LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2025. Police are asking the public to help locate the suspect vehicle, described as a silver mid-2000s Toyota Camry with noticeable damage to the right front grille, bumper, and passenger side mirror.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accidents in Las Vegas
Hit-and-run accidents are particularly tragic as they leave victims without immediate medical assistance, often increasing the severity of injuries or, in cases like this, resulting in fatalities. Bicycle accidents in Las Vegas are a growing concern, especially in areas with high traffic volumes and limited bike lane infrastructure. Roads like Stewart Ave, which accommodate both vehicular and bicycle traffic, can pose significant dangers when drivers fail to exercise caution.
In 2023, Las Vegas experienced a sharp rise in traffic-related fatalities, with bicyclists accounting for a notable percentage of these incidents. Contributing factors to such accidents include distracted driving, failure to yield, and reckless behaviors such as speeding or unsafe lane changes. When drivers flee the scene, victims are left vulnerable, and their chances of survival diminish significantly without prompt medical attention.
For families who have lost loved ones in hit-and-run accidents, the emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming. In Nevada, families may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of income, and other damages if the responsible party is identified. Law enforcement agencies like the LVMPD rely on public assistance to track down hit-and-run drivers, and any information can be critical in bringing justice to grieving families.
