Lawrence County, MO (June 23, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision occurred Saturday afternoon on westbound I-44 near the 36.4 mile marker, leaving a 13-year-old girl with injuries. The crash took place around 3:40 p.m. and involved vehicles traveling westbound in the Lawrence County section of the interstate.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident began when a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 19-year-old male from Taneyville, slowed down to pull onto the shoulder of the roadway. A 2019 Buick Encore, also westbound and driven by a 39-year-old man from Joplin, struck the rear of the Jeep.
The impact caused moderate damage to both vehicles, though each was able to be driven from the scene. The injured passenger—a 13-year-old girl riding in the Jeep—was wearing a seatbelt at the time and sustained injuries. She was transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin for further treatment and evaluation.
CPL L.L. Ray of Troop D led the investigation at the crash site. Both drivers were reportedly wearing safety restraints, and no other injuries were reported.
We extend our best wishes to the injured teen and hope for her speedy recovery.
Rear-End Collisions on Missouri Highways
Rear-end collisions, like the one that occurred on I-44 in Lawrence County, are among the most common types of highway accidents. These crashes often result from inattention, following too closely, or a failure to recognize changes in traffic flow—especially when a vehicle slows unexpectedly to exit or pull off the roadway.
High-speed interstates like I-44 require drivers to remain constantly alert, as even brief lapses in focus can lead to significant impacts. When rear-end collisions involve young passengers, the physical and emotional toll can be especially challenging for families to navigate.
Even minor injuries can require follow-up care, missed school or work, and emotional recovery. It’s important for victims and their families to understand their rights and what steps to take following a crash, particularly when another driver’s inattention may have contributed to the incident.
