Lee County, VA (September 23, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a devastating two-vehicle collision that resulted in one fatality and left multiple people seriously injured in Lee County on Sunday afternoon. According to the Virginia State Police, the crash took place around 2:12 p.m. along Route 58 near the intersection with Burning Well Road.
Medics and fire crews from Lee County were quick to arrive at the scene, providing life-saving care to those hurt in the crash. Authorities confirmed that 61-year-old Deborah L. Wires of Rose Hill was driving a Nissan SUV when her vehicle collided with a Lincoln that had entered the intersection from a stop sign.
Wires was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving. A seven-year-old child traveling in her vehicle suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for advanced trauma care.
The Lincoln was driven by 86-year-old Donald Grabeel, who also sustained serious injuries in the crash. An adult passenger riding with him was similarly injured. Both were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The severity of their conditions has not been publicly disclosed at this time.
Troopers from the Virginia State Police are leading an active investigation into the events surrounding the collision. While the cause has not been officially confirmed, authorities are examining all contributing factors, including potential failure to yield at the intersection.
