Lemont, IL (January 17, 2026) – A tragic head-on collision claimed the life of one driver Friday afternoon on Archer Avenue near Oak Tree Lane, according to the Lemont Police Department.
The crash occurred around 1:00 p.m., prompting a joint emergency response from the Lemont Fire Department and assisting crews from the Palos Fire Department. Both drivers involved in the two-vehicle collision suffered serious injuries and were transported to separate hospitals for emergency treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts, one of the drivers was later pronounced dead at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, authorities confirmed. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family.
Archer Avenue was shut down for an extended period Friday evening as police and crash reconstruction teams worked the scene. The Lemont Police Department is leading the investigation in partnership with the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT), which specializes in reconstructing serious and fatal collisions.
Officials have not yet released information about what may have caused the head-on crash. The area surrounding Oak Tree Lane includes residential neighborhoods and wooded stretches, where traffic conditions can change quickly.
