Lewisville, MN – Two Injured in Head-On Collision on Hwy 15 at 390th St

September 24, 2025

Lewisville, MN (September 24, 2025) – Two drivers were hospitalized following a serious two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on Highway 15 at 390th Street in Watonwan County. The crash involved a northbound Jeep Grand Cherokee and a southbound Peterbilt semi-truck that collided head-on just before 10:45 a.m.

Emergency crews from the Lewisville Fire Department, Truman Ambulance, and sheriff’s offices in Watonwan and Martin Counties responded promptly to the scene. Medics treated both drivers for non-life-threatening injuries before transporting them to area hospitals for further evaluation.

Jacob William Mohwinkel, 31, of Truman, was driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Mayo Clinic Mankato. Authorities reported that alcohol was a factor in his involvement in the crash. The second driver, 41-year-old Armando Magana Mendoza of Granada, was operating the Peterbilt semi and was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries at Saint James Hospital. Road conditions at the time were reported as dry.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and traffic along Highway 15 was impacted for several hours as responders investigated the crash and cleared the scene. The Minnesota State Patrol is handling the investigation, with support from local law enforcement agencies.

We send our best wishes for a swift and full recovery to both individuals involved in this collision.

Rural Highway Collisions in Minnesota

Crashes on rural highways like Highway 15 in Watonwan County can be particularly dangerous due to higher speeds, limited shoulder space, and long stretches without signals or barriers. Head-on collisions in these environments are often caused by distracted or impaired driving, drowsiness, or momentary lane departure—and they frequently result in serious or life-threatening injuries.

In Tuesday’s incident, both drivers were hospitalized, and one was suspected of alcohol involvement—a reminder of how impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of rural highway crashes in Minnesota. Despite dry road conditions, the consequences of even a brief lapse in attention or judgment can be devastating on roads where vehicles are traveling at 55 mph or more.

Emergency response in rural areas also presents unique challenges, including longer transport times and fewer nearby trauma centers. That’s why timely action and multi-agency coordination, like that seen in this crash, are crucial in minimizing harm and supporting victim recovery.

For individuals injured in rural crashes, the aftermath often includes navigating hospital stays, insurance claims, and potential legal consequences. Access to local support networks and guidance is essential for helping families manage these complex situations.

Drivers across southern Minnesota are urged to remain alert, avoid impairment, and use extra caution when passing or approaching oncoming traffic—especially in open-road areas like Highway 15 near Lewisville.

If you or someone you love was injured in a head-on crash in Watonwan County or the surrounding area, it’s important to seek support quickly and know your rights moving forward.
