Roadside Dangers for Law Enforcement in South Carolina
The crash on Hwy 1 in Lexington County underscores the persistent dangers that law enforcement officers face when conducting roadside duties. Despite South Carolina’s “Move Over” law requiring drivers to shift lanes or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, troopers continue to suffer devastating injuries while serving their communities.
This latest incident is particularly troubling given its timing—just weeks after two other troopers were struck, one fatally. For Master Trooper LaBounty, decades of service highlight both the dedication and risks that come with the profession. His case is a stark reminder of how quickly a routine traffic stop can turn life-threatening.
Highway stops are among the most hazardous situations for law enforcement. Vehicles traveling at high speeds, distracted driving, and failure to comply with traffic safety laws all contribute to these tragic events. Even marked patrol cars and emergency lights are not always enough to prevent collisions.
For South Carolina drivers, this incident reinforces the critical importance of staying alert and strictly following roadside safety laws. Reducing speed, moving over, and exercising caution near law enforcement and emergency crews are small actions that can prevent life-altering crashes.
