Lincoln, NE (May 14, 2025)– A tragic head-on collision early Tuesday morning in northern Lancaster County claimed the life of a young driver from Grand Island. Authorities have identified the deceased as 20-year-old Zacharie Cloutier, who was pronounced dead at the scene following the violent crash.
According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Highway 79 near West Bluff Road. Cloutier was traveling southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed into the northbound lanes and struck an oncoming semi truck head-on.
Officials stated that Cloutier was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries upon impact. A 25-year-old truck driver from Lincoln was operating the semi and was not injured in the collision.
Investigators located Delta-8 vape pens inside Cloutier’s vehicle, suggesting that synthetic marijuana may have played a role in the incident. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin indicated that toxicology results are pending to determine if Cloutier was impaired. If confirmed, it would be the first known fatal crash in Lancaster County involving synthetic marijuana.
No citations are expected in the case, and deputies continue to review the findings as they await laboratory analysis.
Risks of Synthetic Impairment and Rural Highway Collisions
Head-on crashes are among the most fatal types of roadway incidents, particularly when they involve commercial vehicles and passenger cars on high-speed rural highways. In this case, the early morning timing, lack of seatbelt use, and potential chemical impairment compounded the risk.
Delta-8 THC, a variant of synthetic cannabis, is legal in many jurisdictions but can still produce psychoactive effects similar to traditional marijuana. Impairment from such substances can reduce reaction time, impair judgment, and significantly increase the chance of crossing into opposing lanes.
Highway 79, especially in the less-populated areas of Lancaster County, sees regular truck traffic and long stretches without median barriers—making lane deviation incidents particularly dangerous. Seatbelt use remains a critical factor in survivability, and this tragedy underscores the importance of both restraint use and sober driving.
