Lincoln, RI (April 8, 2025) – A wrong-way crash on I-295 early Tuesday morning resulted in two people being hospitalized and one driver facing multiple charges. Rhode Island State Police responded to the scene near the Lincoln weigh station around 4:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction.
Authorities say Raul Hernandez, a 41-year-old man from Pawtucket, was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-295 when his vehicle collided head-on with another car. Both drivers were transported to the hospital with complaints of pain following the impact. Hernandez was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, where he remains in police custody.
First responders, including medics and fire crews, worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. A variety of injuries were reported, but none have been confirmed as life-threatening at this time.
Hernandez faces multiple charges, including:
- Reckless driving
- DUI (pending toxicology results)
- Driving with a suspended license
Authorities confirmed that he will be arraigned once he is medically cleared. The investigation remains active, and toxicology results are pending to determine the full scope of the DUI charge.
Our thoughts are with both individuals injured in the crash, and we commend Rhode Island State Police and emergency responders for their prompt intervention.
Wrong-Way Driving and Interstate Collision Risks in Rhode Island
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous traffic incidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high-speed, head-on nature of the impact. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), impaired driving is a leading cause of wrong-way entries onto highways.
I-295, a major interstate bypass route in Rhode Island, has seen similar incidents in the past, prompting increased attention to signage and preventive technology. Drivers entering wrong-way ramps often do so due to confusion, impairment, or unfamiliarity with the area—especially during early morning or overnight hours.
Victims of wrong-way crashes may face long recovery periods, and legal representation is often essential to pursue compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and emotional distress.
