Linn County, MO (August 8, 2025) – A rear-end collision involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck left one man injured on Wednesday evening on US Highway 36, just two miles west of Meadville. The crash occurred during an attempted passing maneuver and remains under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at approximately 6:33 p.m. on August 7, as a 46-year-old man from Gallatin, MO, was driving a 2003 GMC Sierra eastbound on US 36. Authorities say the driver attempted to overtake a 2017 Peterbilt 389, also traveling eastbound, but struck the rear of the semi during the maneuver.
The impact caused the GMC to sustain total damage. It was towed from the scene by Still’s Towing. The semi, operated by a 58-year-old man from Meadville, received only minor damage and was driven from the scene. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was transported by Linn County Ambulance to Pershing Memorial Hospital for treatment. The semi driver was not injured.
Trooper Billings, along with the Linn County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department, assisted with the scene and investigation. No citations or charges have been reported at this time.
We wish the injured driver a smooth and full recovery.
Rear-End Truck Accidents in Missouri
Collisions between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks on Missouri highways pose serious risks, particularly during overtaking attempts or lane changes at high speeds. Wednesday evening’s crash on US 36 is a clear reminder of the dangers that can arise during highway passing maneuvers, even when both vehicles are traveling in the same direction.
US 36 near Meadville serves as a key route for both local drivers and commercial transporters. Its wide, multi-lane layout can lead to high-speed passing, but when drivers misjudge distance or timing, especially around large trucks, the consequences can include major vehicle damage and serious injuries.
Fortunately, in this incident, the pickup driver suffered only minor injuries, and both vehicles remained on the roadway. The involvement of a semi-truck underscores the risk: due to their size and weight, commercial vehicles can create much greater force in even low-speed impacts, often leaving smaller vehicles with significant damage.
For drivers recovering from injuries in these types of crashes, the aftermath often includes more than just medical care; vehicle loss, insurance claims, and loss of income are all common stressors. It’s important to understand your rights and options after any collision involving a commercial truck, particularly when fault and liability must be established.
