Long Beach, CA (September 8, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian accident claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy Saturday evening in Long Beach. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on September 6 at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Rose Avenue, just south of the Artesia (91) Freeway, according to Long Beach Police Department officials.
Authorities reported that the young child ran into the street and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Artesia Blvd. Emergency medical teams responded quickly to the scene and transported the boy to a local hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, the child later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and fully cooperated with police. Preliminary findings indicate that speed, distracted driving, and impairment were not factors in the incident. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances, and no charges have been announced at this time.
The area was temporarily closed as officers from the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail processed the scene and spoke with witnesses. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine all contributing factors.
We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family during this heartbreaking time.
Pedestrian Accidents Involving Children in California
The devastating loss of a 3-year-old in a pedestrian collision on Artesia Blvd underscores the vulnerability of young children in traffic environments. While accidents involving pedestrians are always serious, incidents involving young victims bring especially profound grief to families and communities.
In California, pedestrian fatalities remain a persistent problem—particularly in densely populated areas like Long Beach. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, children under the age of 14 represent a significant portion of pedestrian injuries and deaths statewide. Quick and unpredictable movements, such as running into the street, make young children especially difficult for drivers to anticipate—even under otherwise safe conditions.
Intersections near freeway corridors like the one at Artesia Blvd and Rose Ave often involve complex traffic patterns, making them particularly hazardous for pedestrians. Even when drivers are alert and obeying the law, split-second decisions can result in irreversible consequences.
For grieving families, the emotional trauma of losing a child in such a sudden and tragic way can feel unbearable. In these moments, having access to community support, grief counseling, and victim advocacy services is critical. While no action can undo such a loss, support systems can offer comfort and help families navigate the difficult journey ahead.
Improving pedestrian safety through infrastructure design, traffic calming, and education remains an urgent goal in California cities. But in the meantime, ensuring children are supervised near busy roads and teaching road awareness at an early age can help reduce similar tragedies.
