Los Angeles, CA (July 17, 2025) – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash in South Los Angeles as 32-year-old Edgar Cumplido, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. Hit-and-Run Bicycle Fatalities in California
The tragic death of Edgar Cumplido underscores a growing and deeply troubling trend across California: hit-and-run collisions involving bicyclists. South Los Angeles, where this incident occurred, is densely populated and heavily traveled by both vehicles and cyclists, often in areas with limited lighting and infrastructure.
Hit-and-run crashes are particularly devastating for families, as they not only result in loss of life but also leave loved ones searching for justice. In this case, the Tesla driver’s failure to stop and render aid violated both moral and legal responsibilities. Under California law, leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is a felony offense.
Bicyclists are especially vulnerable in collisions with vehicles, as they lack the protective barriers that motor vehicle occupants have. High-speed impacts often lead to catastrophic or fatal injuries, even when riders wear helmets and follow traffic laws.
Los Angeles continues to grapple with a high rate of fatal crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists. Safety advocates are calling for increased enforcement, improved bike infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns to address the dangers cyclists face on city streets.
For families affected by deadly hit-and-run collisions, the path forward can be filled with uncertainty, pain, and unanswered questions. Accessing legal support, mental health services, and investigative updates becomes crucial in the pursuit of justice and healing.
