Los Angeles, CA (July 17, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle pedestrian collision early Tuesday morning claimed one life on the Harbor (110) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:50 a.m. on July 15 near the W Exposition Blvd exit.
Investigators reported that a pedestrian attempted to run across the southbound lanes of I-110 when they were struck by at least two and possibly three vehicles. The impact caused fatal injuries, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Three vehicles potentially involved in the collision — a Dodge Ram, a Chevy Tahoe, and a silver Kia — were stopped nearby by CHP officers. The drivers were questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not confirmed whether any of the motorists will face charges or citations.
The crash caused significant disruptions to morning traffic as investigators worked to examine the scene and collect evidence. All southbound lanes were later reopened after several hours of closure.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Deaths on California Freeways
Pedestrian fatalities on freeways remain among the most devastating and complex incidents faced by California traffic authorities. This tragic crash on I-110 highlights the extreme danger pedestrians face when entering restricted-access highways, especially in pre-dawn hours when visibility is low and traffic speeds are high.
Downtown Los Angeles is surrounded by a dense network of freeway systems, including the Harbor Freeway, which sees tens of thousands of vehicles daily. While pedestrian access to freeways is prohibited, there are still many instances where individuals enter the roadway — sometimes unintentionally or in distress — creating a high-risk scenario for themselves and oncoming drivers.
Multi-vehicle collisions involving pedestrians are especially difficult to process, both for investigators and for the motorists involved. Even when drivers attempt to brake or swerve, high speeds and limited reaction time often leave little chance to avoid a fatal outcome.
Authorities will continue reviewing dashcam footage, vehicle damage, and witness statements to confirm the sequence of events. These details will help determine how and why the pedestrian was on the freeway, as well as the level of involvement of each driver.
For the loved ones left behind, fatal pedestrian crashes often bring both emotional grief and legal complexities. Families may seek answers regarding the circumstances, liability, and potential sources of support after such sudden losses.
