Los Angeles, CA (April 24, 2025) – A significant traffic collision involving a cyclist (initially believed to be motorcyclists) occurred early Wednesday morning on the northbound lanes of Interstate 405 near La Cienega Blvd in the Los Angeles Freeway Service Patrol (LAFSP) area. The crash caused major traffic disruptions and led to a SigAlert for the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane.
The incident was first reported around 7:46 a.m. by motorists who witnessed two individuals down in the roadway, initially described as motorcyclists. As emergency teams began arriving on the scene shortly after 7:52 a.m., it was confirmed that at least one of the individuals involved was a cyclist, though details regarding the second individual’s status or involvement remain under investigation.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The Los Angeles County Fire Department was promptly dispatched and coordinated with CHP officers to manage the scene, which was blocking both the HOV and #1 lane of the freeway. Responders requested that units shut down the HOV lane to safely conduct rescue and traffic management operations.
A flatbed tow truck was called to remove the damaged bicycle or vehicle from the scene. At 8:13 a.m., CHP unit A79-012T issued a SigAlert for the HOV lane, estimating at least a 45-minute delay for northbound commuters. Emergency crews remained on site to provide aid and begin clearing the area.
As of the latest reports, it is unclear whether the cyclist was struck by a vehicle or crashed due to roadway conditions or another factor. The injured parties’ conditions have not been disclosed publicly, and no details regarding the vehicle involved have been confirmed.
Cyclists and Freeway Dangers in Greater Los Angeles
While bicycles are generally prohibited on California freeways, incidents involving cyclists on or near freeway entrances or exits occasionally occur—either due to navigation errors, breakdowns, or unauthorized travel. High-speed environments like I-405 are exceptionally dangerous for cyclists, and collisions in such areas often lead to severe or life-threatening injuries.
The La Cienega Blvd interchange is a major access point on one of the busiest freeways in the country. With constant congestion and fast-moving traffic, even minor obstructions can lead to chain-reaction events. In this incident, the presence of a cyclist (or cyclists) on the freeway likely contributed to the emergency nature of the response and the decision to close the HOV lane.
Cyclists are reminded to avoid freeway travel unless explicitly permitted and to utilize safe, marked bike lanes in urban areas. Local transportation departments continue working toward expanding safe cycling routes throughout Los Angeles, but challenges remain, especially near major freeway corridors.
