Lower Paxton Township, PA (September 16, 2025) – A late-night police pursuit in Dauphin County ended in a serious crash that injured two people on Interstate 83. The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Monday when officers with the Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police observed a dark blue Honda CR-V speeding recklessly on Union Deposit Rd near Rutherford Rd, with no rear lights. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to yield and continued at a high rate of speed.
Authorities reported that officers briefly lost sight of the Honda before spotting it again traveling eastbound on Union Deposit Rd near Progress Ave. The driver entered I-83 using the Union Deposit northbound on-ramp but began driving southbound in the northbound lanes. Police say they terminated the pursuit for safety reasons, but within half a mile, the Honda collided head-on with a white box truck carrying two occupants.
Emergency responders transported the driver of the Honda, identified as 18-year-old Nyceire Coiley of Harrisburg, to Hershey Medical Center for treatment. The driver and passenger of the box truck were also taken to local hospitals with minor injuries; both were treated and later released. Investigators determined that Coiley was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol at well over the legal limit. He was arrested and now faces charges including fleeing or attempting to elude police, DUI, and related offenses.
Our thoughts are with the truck driver and passenger injured in this frightening crash, and we wish them a swift recovery.
DUI Accidents in Pennsylvania
The crash on I-83 underscores the severe risks posed by impaired and reckless driving. When drivers choose to operate a vehicle under the influence, they not only endanger themselves but also put innocent people at risk. In this case, two people were injured when their box truck was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling the wrong way at high speeds.
Pennsylvania continues to report thousands of DUI-related crashes each year, many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Wrong-way driving incidents, particularly those fueled by impairment, are among the most dangerous types of crashes due to their high likelihood of head-on impact. In Dauphin County, where interstates like I-83 carry heavy commuter and freight traffic, these collisions can have devastating consequences.
Law enforcement agencies across the state emphasize the importance of responsible choices and urge drivers to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or using alternative transportation.
