Lubbock, TX (September 2, 2025) – A police chase in northwest Lubbock ended in a violent crash late on Sunday night, leaving several people injured, including a young child who was hospitalized with serious injuries.
The incident began just before 11 p.m. on September 1 when officers were attending to a separate collision near 4th St and Bangor Ave. During this time, a passenger car driven by 18-year-old Selena Lucero struck a motorcycle nearby and fled the scene. Lucero reportedly led officers on a brief pursuit before failing to stop at a sign and colliding with another vehicle at the intersection of 2nd Dr and Slide Rd.
Emergency crews arrived quickly to assess the scene and provide aid to the injured. Three passengers in Lucero’s vehicle suffered injuries, including two adults with moderate injuries and an 11-month-old child who sustained serious injuries. The child was transported to University Medical Center (UMC) for treatment and was later released to Child Protective Services after being medically cleared.
The driver of the other vehicle involved also suffered moderate injuries. Authorities confirmed that both Lucero and another individual were arrested in connection with the incident. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured, especially the young child and their family. We hope for full recoveries for all affected.
Crashes Involving Police Pursuits in Texas
This incident in Lubbock shines a light on the dangers surrounding police pursuits, particularly in residential or mixed-traffic areas like 2nd Dr and Slide Rd. While officers are trained to manage pursuits carefully, fleeing suspects increase the danger for everyone on the road, including passengers and unrelated motorists.
In this case, the crash followed a series of critical errors, including fleeing the scene of a prior crash, speeding through a stop sign, and endangering innocent passengers. Most notably, an infant under the age of one suffered serious injuries. Fortunately, thanks to rapid medical intervention and trauma care at UMC, the child was stabilized and released, though the long-term emotional impact remains.
High-speed chases are unpredictable and often involve multiple vehicle types and unsuspecting drivers. That’s why areas like northwest Lubbock, where residential streets intersect with busy routes like Slide Rd, can become high-risk zones during police activity.
It’s crucial for community members to understand that even a few seconds of reckless driving can lead to life-altering consequences. For parents and caregivers, ensuring child safety restraints are properly secured can drastically reduce the severity of injuries in a crash.
