Lyon County, KS (August 11, 2025) – A three-vehicle collision on Sunday night on US-56 in northern Lyon County left one person seriously injured. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 9:09 p.m., approximately two miles east of Allen. Investigators said a 2016 Peterbilt semi hauling a 16-foot-wide oversized load struck a westbound 2007 Chevrolet Impala. After the initial impact, the Impala then collided with a 2012 Peterbilt semi, also hauling a 16-foot-wide oversized load in the eastbound lane. Both the Impala and the second semi came to rest in the south ditch.
The Impala’s driver, a 21-year-old Gypsum man, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing a seat belt at the time. The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with the injured driver as he recovers.
Oversized Load Trucking Risks in Kansas
Hauling oversized loads presents unique challenges for truck operators and can create hazardous conditions for other motorists. On rural highways like US-56, the combination of large vehicle size, reduced maneuverability, and nighttime travel can significantly increase collision risk. Kansas transportation regulations require permits, escort vehicles, and proper lighting for such hauls. However, even with precautions, narrow lanes and oncoming traffic can make passing hazardous.
State crash data indicates that accidents involving oversized loads often lead to severe outcomes due to the sheer mass and width of the vehicles. Safety advocates stress the importance of clear communication between escort teams and truck drivers, as well as heightened caution from other motorists when approaching or overtaking these vehicles. Ongoing training and infrastructure adjustments aim to improve safety for all road users sharing Kansas highways with oversized load transports.
