Madera County, CA (September 15, 2025) – A devastating collision between a van and a big rig claimed the lives of three children and left three others injured Saturday evening in a rural intersection west of Ripperdan, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash occurred around 6:00 PM on September 13 at the intersection of Road 24 and Avenue 7. Preliminary reports from CHP indicate that a van carrying a family of five ran a stop sign at the intersection and was struck broadside by a westbound big rig hauling two trailers.
The impact of the crash was catastrophic. A 15-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. A 6-year-old girl was transported with major injuries to Valley Children’s Hospital but sadly did not survive. A 17-year-old girl was also killed in the crash, though officials have not yet confirmed the location or timing of her passing.
The 45-year-old woman driving the van—believed to be the mother of the children—and another passenger sustained major injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities. The 38-year-old driver of the big rig suffered moderate injuries. All surviving victims were hospitalized for treatment.
The big rig careened into a nearby canal following the crash, spilling diesel fuel into the waterway, which prompted an environmental containment response.
Authorities confirmed that alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the collision. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family suffering this unimaginable loss, and we wish all injured parties strength and healing during their recovery.
