Manassas, VA (July 12, 2025) – Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after a fatal crash involving a scooter and an SUV earlier this week in Prince William County. The collision occurred on Thursday, July 10, at the intersection of Portsmouth Road and Ashland Avenue, and led to the death of 40-year-old Eric Corrales of Manassas.
According to police, Corrales was riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk and attempted to enter the intersection when he was struck by a 2020 Dodge Journey making a left turn. The SUV was driven by 37-year-old Little David Arris Bowser Mason, who, officials say, did not have a valid driver’s license.
Corrales, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries and later died at a local hospital on Thursday, July 11. Mason and his passengers were unharmed, but Mason has since been charged with operating a vehicle without a license.
The incident remains under investigation by the Prince William County Police Department.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Eric Corrales during this time of loss.
Pedestrian and Scooter Crash Dangers in Manassas Intersections
With the rising use of personal electric vehicles in cities like Manassas, crashes involving scooters are becoming increasingly common, particularly at high-conflict intersections like Portsmouth Road and Ashland Avenue. These areas often lack dedicated infrastructure for scooters or cyclists, making sidewalk transitions and turning vehicles a significant danger.
According to recent Virginia traffic safety data, scooter riders are at heightened risk of fatal injury in suburban and urban intersections, especially when helmets are not used. Legal recourse may be available to families facing loss due to traffic violations or unlicensed drivers.
Support for victims’ families can include wrongful death claims, insurance navigation, and guidance through the aftermath of a fatal crash.
