Manhattan, IL (January 16, 2026) – A deadly head-on collision involving a school bus and a passenger car occurred Thursday morning in a suburban area of Chicago, resulting in one fatality and multiple hospitalizations. The crash took place at approximately 8:17 a.m., according to the Manhattan Fire Protection District.
Illinois State Police confirmed that the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The school bus was transporting 10 students from Manhattan School District 114 at the time of the collision. While no life-threatening injuries were reported among the children, all students and the bus driver were transported to local hospitals for evaluation due to the force of the impact.
Emergency responders arrived quickly to assess the situation and render aid. The bus sustained significant front-end damage, and authorities closed off the surrounding area to safely investigate and clear the roadway.
Fire and police officials noted that the decision to transport all passengers was made out of an abundance of caution. The conditions of those hospitalized have not been detailed, though officials stated that injuries among the students appeared to be minor.
