Pedestrian Fatalities and Roadway Safety in Suffolk County
Pedestrian deaths remain a serious concern on Long Island roadways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility can be limited. The fatal crash on Route 111 in Manorville highlights the risks faced by pedestrians in suburban communities, where sidewalks may be limited and traffic speeds relatively high.
Incidents like this often occur in areas with minimal crosswalk infrastructure, few pedestrian signals, and high commuter volumes. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, Suffolk County consistently ranks among the highest in the state for pedestrian-related fatalities. Darkness, weather conditions, and lack of reflective clothing all contribute to increased risk, especially before sunrise.
In this case, Thomas Regan was crossing Route 111 near Chapman Boulevard, a section of roadway that is not known for heavy pedestrian use. The timing of the crash—shortly before 6:00 a.m.—coincides with early commuter traffic, further compounding the dangers for those on foot.
For drivers, the incident serves as a sobering reminder to remain alert, especially during low-light hours and near intersections where pedestrians may attempt to cross. For local municipalities, it raises continued questions about whether additional safety measures such as lighting, signage, or crosswalks may be warranted.
Losing a loved one in a pedestrian crash is a devastating event, and the emotional, financial, and legal aftermath can be overwhelming for families.
