Marston, MO (August 12, 2025) – A tragic accident in New Madrid County claimed the life of a 64-year-old man on Sunday afternoon after his electric bicycle collided with a pickup truck on US-61 in Marston. The crash occurred at approximately 12:19 p.m. when the westbound bicycle entered the path of a northbound 2004 Ford F350. The impact caused severe damage to the bicycle and moderate damage to the truck.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the cyclist, a Marston resident, was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Delisle at 12:41 p.m. The driver of the pickup, a 38-year-old man from Portageville, was not injured. Both vehicles were removed by Sprouse Towing. Authorities have confirmed that the next of kin has been notified.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Fatal Bicycle Accidents in Missouri

Bicyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users, particularly when traveling on high-speed highways like US-61. Unlike urban bike lanes or dedicated paths, rural and highway-adjacent roads often provide limited separation between motor vehicles and bicycles, increasing the risk of deadly collisions. In Sunday’s case, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred when the bicycle failed to yield, pulling directly into the truck’s path.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, fatal bicycle crashes often involve factors such as limited visibility, high vehicle speeds, and failure to yield right-of-way. Even when safety equipment is used, the force of impact with a motor vehicle can be catastrophic for a cyclist. Public safety advocates stress the need for drivers to remain alert for cyclists, especially in areas where vehicle speeds are high and road shoulders are narrow.

Local Accident Reports urges both motorists and cyclists to follow all traffic laws and maintain heightened awareness when sharing the road.
