Melbourne, FL (September 11, 2025) – A 50-year-old Palm Bay man, identified as Roy Breault, was tragically killed early Wednesday morning in a motorcycle crash involving an SUV at the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
The collision occurred just before 6:30 a.m. when Melissa Lopez, a 34-year-old woman from Melbourne, was traveling east on Eau Gallie Boulevard in an SUV. At the same time, Breault was traveling west on his motorcycle. As Lopez attempted to make a left turn onto Stewart Avenue, she entered the path of the oncoming motorcycle, resulting in a violent impact.
Breault was pronounced dead at the scene, and no additional injuries were reported. The Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is actively investigating the crash to determine if charges or citations will be filed.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Roy Breault during this incredibly difficult time.
Left-Turn Motorcycle Collisions Are Among the Deadliest in Florida
Motorcycle crashes involving left-turning vehicles are among the most frequent and fatal types of collisions on Florida roads. The tragic death of Roy Breault highlights a common scenario: a driver turning left into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. Despite right-of-way laws that require left-turning vehicles to yield to approaching traffic, these accidents continue to occur with alarming regularity.
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in such crashes due to their lack of physical protection and the reduced reaction time drivers often have when misjudging speed or distance. The impact in these incidents often results in fatal head trauma, blunt force injuries, or internal bleeding—especially when the motorcyclist is thrown from the vehicle.
Florida law allows surviving family members of motorcycle crash victims to pursue wrongful death claims, which can help cover funeral costs, lost income, and emotional suffering. These claims are especially important when negligence—such as failure to yield or improper turning—is identified as the cause of the crash.
The intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Stewart Avenue is a busy corridor where commuter traffic and local residents converge during early morning hours. This area’s traffic flow, signal timing, and turning access have been points of concern in past incidents, and further evaluation may be warranted in light of this tragic event.
For families mourning the loss of a loved one in a motorcycle crash, early legal guidance and compassionate support can help ease the path toward accountability and healing.
