Memphis, TN (January 16, 2026) – An accident involving five vehicles led to the deaths of two individuals and left two others injured on Interstate 55 near the South Parkway exit, according to the Memphis Police Department.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported the crash around 4:30 p.m., prompting a complete shutdown of I-55 for more than five hours. Emergency responders from Memphis Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene to assess the situation, treat the wounded, and assist with traffic control as drivers were redirected onto East McLemore Avenue.
Two victims sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Paramedics transported two additional individuals to a local hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover.
The crash created major delays throughout the evening as law enforcement conducted an extensive investigation into what caused the multi-vehicle pileup. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved, and the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under review.
