Menominee Township, MI (August 26, 2025) – Emergency responders from Menominee Township were dispatched to a serious multi-vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.
According to the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 12:08 p.m. on County Rd 577 near the intersection of Number 2 Rd. Upon arrival, medics and fire crews worked quickly to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision, which involved an SUV and two pickup trucks.
Authorities reported that the driver of the SUV, identified as 85-year-old Gary Gene Nyman of Menominee Township, was heading southbound when he crossed into the northbound lane, striking two pickup trucks traveling in the opposite direction. One of the trucks was towing a camper and came to a stop in the middle of the roadway due to the impact.
Tragically, Nyman sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the two pickup trucks reportedly suffered minor injuries and received on-site treatment from paramedics.
The Michigan State Police have joined the investigation and are currently handling the accident reconstruction. Officials have not released further information as the investigation remains ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Nyman. We also extend our thoughts to the individuals recovering from their injuries.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Michigan
Accidents involving more than two vehicles, such as the tragic incident on County Rd 577, often unfold in seconds and can lead to severe consequences for all involved. Multi-vehicle crashes are not only more complex from an investigative standpoint, but they also typically cause increased disruption, higher injury rates, and greater challenges for emergency response teams.
In this recent Menominee Township crash, the situation escalated quickly due to a southbound vehicle veering into oncoming traffic. When one driver loses control or becomes disoriented, it can set off a chain reaction, especially in rural or curved roadways common in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Accidents in these areas may also be influenced by visibility, speed, or road familiarity, though no official cause has yet been determined.
Crashes involving elderly drivers, such as the 85-year-old motorist in this incident, raise important questions around aging and road safety. While many seniors are safe drivers, age-related changes in reaction time and vision can increase crash risk. This tragic event highlights the need for continuous evaluation of driving capabilities as people age, especially in areas with complex roadways and limited shoulder space.
Reconstruction specialists with Michigan State Police will likely evaluate skid marks, point-of-impact evidence, and vehicle trajectories to determine what led to the initial lane departure. Such reconstructions are essential to understanding not only the cause of the crash but also identifying any mechanical or road design factors that may have played a role.
