Mentor, OH (August 15, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Wednesday afternoon on I-90 East near State Route 306 in Mentor has claimed the life of an 85-year-old man and left two others injured. The crash led to the full closure of a portion of the interstate for several hours.
According to the Mentor Police Department, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when a Jeep collided with a Toyota RAV4, which then struck an additional vehicle. The Jeep continued forward, hitting a Ford Focus and the trailer of a semi-truck. The driver of the Jeep, identified as James Kephart of Geneva, was pulled from the wreckage by two witnesses and rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Kephart was reportedly alone in his vehicle at the time of the collision. Two individuals who had been riding in the Toyota RAV4 were also injured and transported to a hospital in Willoughby for non-life-threatening treatment.
The eastbound lanes of I-90 remained closed for several hours, with full reopening delayed until approximately 6:00 p.m. Authorities have not yet determined what triggered the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
