Metro Detroit, MI (May 2, 2025) – A tragic series of events unfolded late Thursday night along westbound I-94 near 10 Mile Rd, where a man was fatally struck by two vehicles after stepping out of his car following a single-vehicle crash.
According to Michigan State Police, the Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a crash just before 9:30 p.m. on May 1. When troopers arrived, they discovered that not one, but two separate incidents had taken place in close succession.
The initial crash involved a single vehicle that veered off the roadway and came to a stop on the left shoulder of westbound I-94. After exiting his disabled vehicle, the male driver was walking alongside the freeway when another car approached and lost control. That vehicle struck the man and propelled him into the left lane, where a second vehicle struck him again.
Emergency medical services responded quickly and transported the man to a nearby hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced dead from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the first vehicle to strike the pedestrian, a 30-year-old man from Detroit, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody and remains lodged pending further investigation. The second driver, who was involved in the secondary impact, was evaluated and released at the scene.
All westbound lanes of I-94 were shut down near 10 Mile Rd for several hours while police conducted their investigation and cleared the roadway. The Michigan Department of Transportation issued alerts warning drivers to avoid the area during the closure.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this heartbreaking accident.
Highway Pedestrian Fatalities in Michigan
Incidents involving pedestrians on highways are among the most dangerous and often fatal, particularly when they occur in high-speed zones like I-94. The situation near 10 Mile Rd underscores the extreme risks individuals face when exiting their vehicles on interstates, even in the aftermath of a crash.
Motorists who exit disabled vehicles often do so in areas with little to no shoulder space, limited lighting, and vehicles traveling at speeds exceeding 65 mph. In these moments, the risk of being struck by a passing driver, especially one under the influence or distracted, is dramatically increased.
This case also highlights the compounding danger of impaired driving. The first driver to hit the pedestrian is facing potential legal consequences due to suspected intoxication, a factor that continues to play a tragic role in fatal roadway incidents across Michigan.
For grieving families, the road to healing includes not only emotional recovery but also navigating the aftermath of sudden loss—medical expenses, funeral arrangements, and potential legal proceedings. That’s why access to information and local resources is so critical in moments like this.
