Miami, FL (August 19, 2025) – A tragic early-morning collision on Tuesday left one person dead and another critically injured after a vehicle struck an electric bicycle carrying two riders on Interstate 195 in Miami.
According to Lt. Alex Camacho of the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just after 3:00 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-195 near Alton Rd. A white Ford sedan was traveling eastbound when it collided with the electric bicycle, which was being ridden by two individuals. The circumstances surrounding why the e-bike was on the interstate remain under investigation.
Both victims were transported by emergency responders to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Despite the efforts of trauma teams, one of the bicyclists succumbed to their injuries. The other remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The eastbound lanes of I-195 remained closed well into the morning rush hour near Biscayne Blvd as investigators worked to document the scene and clear the wreckage.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, and it is unclear at this time whether the driver of the Ford sedan will face any charges.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this heartbreaking time.
E-Bike and Vehicle Collisions in Florida
Tuesday’s deadly crash on I-195 brings renewed attention to the dangers of e-bikes operating on high-speed roadways. While electric bicycles are a growing mode of transport in Florida, they remain vulnerable in environments not designed for their safe use—particularly limited-access highways like I-195.
Although full details of this incident are still under investigation, the presence of an e-bike on an interstate raises questions about road access, visibility conditions, and overall awareness by both riders and drivers. Highways are not legal or appropriate environments for bicycles or e-bikes in most cases, due to fast-moving traffic, limited shoulder space, and restricted entry/exit points.
Florida continues to see a rise in e-bike use, especially in urban hubs like Miami. With that growth comes a rise in serious accidents involving motor vehicles. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, electric bike crashes involving serious injury or death are steadily increasing, often because these devices lack the protective features of traditional motor vehicles.
This crash underscores the need for clearer infrastructure guidance and public education around where e-bikes can be safely operated. It also serves as a grim reminder of the importance of visibility, proper lighting, and protective gear for riders, especially in the early hours of the morning.
For those injured in e-bike and vehicle collisions, the recovery process can be long and complicated. In addition to medical bills and emotional trauma, victims and their families often need help navigating legal questions, insurance challenges, and community resources.
If your family has been affected by a serious e-bike or vehicle crash, it’s important to take action quickly. Understanding your rights and connecting with the right support system can make all the difference in your recovery and peace of mind.
