Middlefield, CT (September 1, 2025) – A violent two-vehicle collision on Route 66 (Meriden Road) late Friday night left one person dead and another with serious injuries, according to Connecticut State Police and local fire officials.
Emergency crews responded just before midnight to a stretch of Route 66 east of Baileyville Road, where they found two heavily damaged vehicles. One of the vehicles had rolled onto its roof and was on fire in the engine compartment. Firefighters reported that nearby bystanders acted quickly, pulling an occupant from the overturned car before flames could spread further. The rescued individual was treated at the scene for serious injuries and later transported to Hartford Hospital. LifeStar medical helicopter was initially requested but later canceled.
Tragically, the driver of the second vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead. The deceased was identified by state police as 46-year-old Venancio Papalotzi-George, a resident of Meriden.
Route 66 remained closed for several hours into Saturday morning while members of the Connecticut State Police accident reconstruction team investigated the crash. The roadway has since reopened. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Troop F as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
