Milford, OH (February 7, 2025) – A woman was killed, and two men were injured following a devastating overnight house fire in Milford. Crews were dispatched to the 700 block of Elizabeth Street around 1:30 AM after reports of a fully-involved house fire with visible flames.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a rapidly spreading fire, and a portion of the structure collapsed early during the response, preventing crews from entering the home safely. “The structure did suffer a collapse very early on in the emergency. That prevented crews from getting into the structure safely,” said Milford Community Fire Department Chief Mark Baird. Crews later brought in a large light truck to aid in extinguishing the fire and to safely begin the investigation once the structure was stabilized.
Two men managed to escape the burning home but suffered injuries in the process. They were treated at the scene and transported to local hospitals. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
After the fire was extinguished and the structure deemed safe for entry, officials discovered the remains of 59-year-old Joan Davis inside the home. Authorities believe the fire was sparked by a space heater, though the investigation into the official cause is ongoing.
Neighbor Dany Meza Rodriguez recounted his emotional experience consoling one of the men who escaped the fire. “It was just heartbreaking to hear it,” Rodriguez said. “It really almost made me cry when I was trying to console him.”
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Joan Davis. We also extend our thoughts to the injured individuals and wish them a swift and full recovery.
House Fires and Space Heater Safety in Ohio
The tragic house fire on Elizabeth Street in Milford serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with space heaters and residential fires, particularly during the colder months. Space heaters are a leading cause of house fires, often due to improper use, faulty wiring, or proximity to flammable materials. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States.
To reduce the risk of space heater-related fires, it’s essential to follow these safety precautions:
- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials, such as curtains, bedding, and furniture.
- Never leave a space heater unattended while it is operating. Always turn it off when leaving the room or going to bed.
- Use space heaters with automatic shut-off features in case the device tips over or overheats.
- Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets rather than using extension cords or power strips, which can overheat.
- Regularly inspect heaters for damage and replace them if cords are frayed or components are malfunctioning.
