Millsboro, DE (May 23, 2025) – A tragic collision earlier this week has claimed the life of a young Dagsboro man, following a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Hollyville Rd and Harmons Hill Rd. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Monday, May 20.
Nineteen-year-old Charles Williamson was behind the wheel of a Lincoln sedan heading west on Hollyville Rd when, for reasons still under investigation, he veered into oncoming traffic. His vehicle collided head-on with a Cadillac SUV driven by a 52-year-old man, also from Dagsboro, who was traveling eastbound.
Authorities say the SUV driver attempted evasive action but was unable to avoid impact. Williamson, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
The SUV’s driver and a 56-year-old passenger were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Charles Williamson during this heartbreaking time.
Fatal Crashes in Delaware
The loss of life on Delaware roadways—especially among young drivers—continues to highlight pressing safety concerns. Monday’s deadly crash near Millsboro underscores the importance of seat belt use, driver attentiveness, and quick reflexes, even on familiar local roads like Hollyville Rd. This stretch, like many in Sussex County, is rural and may lack the protective infrastructure of urban highways, increasing the risk of severe collisions.
In this case, initial reports indicate that the Lincoln sedan crossed into the opposing lane, leading to a violent impact. The SUV driver’s effort to swerve likely minimized further harm, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the loss of life. Situations like these often unfold in mere seconds, leaving drivers with limited time to react.
For communities like Dagsboro and Millsboro, these incidents reverberate beyond the crash site. Families face sudden grief, while others involved must contend with both physical recovery and the emotional toll of trauma. Investigations not only help determine cause—they also serve as opportunities to improve road safety through awareness, enforcement, and infrastructure upgrades.
When tragedies occur, having support systems in place is essential. Resources such as counseling, legal advice, and medical coordination can help families and survivors navigate the aftermath. It’s important to remember that even in moments of profound loss, help is available.
