Mishawaka, IN – 92-Year-Old Woman Killed in Train Crash at Spring St Crossing

June 30, 2025

Mishawaka, IN (June 30, 2025) – A 92-year-old woman from Granger was tragically killed Saturday evening when a Norfolk Southern train struck her vehicle at a railroad crossing in Mishawaka. The deadly crash occurred just before 6:15 p.m. at the Spring Street crossing, located between 4th Street and 6th Street.

According to investigators, the vehicle, driven by Georgia Johnson, traveled beneath the lowered crossing arms just moments before being hit by the oncoming freight train. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The incident is the second in the region within a week in which a vehicle drove around lowered railroad crossing gates, resulting in a fatal train collision. Last Thursday, a separate crash in Gary claimed the lives of five individuals when an SUV attempted to cross despite the active warnings and was struck by a South Shore commuter train.

Local and railroad authorities are continuing to investigate Saturday’s crash, including reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts. Norfolk Southern has also launched its own internal safety review of the incident.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Georgia Johnson during this heartbreaking time.

Railroad Crossing Crashes in Indiana

The fatal crash at the Spring Street railroad crossing in Mishawaka is part of a troubling pattern of accidents involving vehicles attempting to bypass active railroad warnings. With two such tragedies occurring in the same region within days, the incident highlights the deadly consequences of disregarding lowered gates and warning systems.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, Indiana consistently ranks among the top states for railroad crossing collisions. These crashes are often preventable and typically result in severe or fatal outcomes due to the speed and force of impact involved when a train strikes a vehicle.

Experts urge all drivers to treat railroad crossing signals with the same seriousness as traffic lights. When gates are down and lights are flashing, it is imperative to stop and wait until the signals are fully deactivated before proceeding. Even a few seconds of delay can be the difference between safety and tragedy.

For the families left behind, the aftermath includes grief, funeral planning, and navigating legal and insurance complexities. Community support and access to resources for healing and closure are essential.
