Mission, TX (September 8, 2025) – A 17-year-old was tragically killed in a two-vehicle crash late Saturday night in Mission, prompting an investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The collision occurred at approximately 10:28 p.m. at the intersection of La Homa Rd and 66th St, just south of Mile 5.
According to a preliminary report from Texas DPS, a 2020 Toyota Tacoma was heading westbound on 66th St when the driver failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a 2006 GMC Envoy traveling northbound on La Homa Rd. The impact caused the GMC to spin, strike a nearby fence and utility pole, and roll over onto its roof, eventually stopping in the southbound lanes.
Tragically, the driver of the GMC—identified as 17-year-old Latwon Oscar Uribe of Mission—died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Tacoma was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for medical evaluation. Their condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Latwon Oscar Uribe during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend appreciation to the emergency responders who arrived swiftly to provide aid and secure the scene.
Fatal Auto Accidents in Texas
The fatal crash that claimed the life of a local teen in Mission illustrates the devastating consequences that can stem from a single moment of misjudgment on Texas roadways. Intersections, especially those controlled by stop signs, are among the most common locations for serious and fatal collisions. Failing to yield the right of way remains one of the leading causes of these crashes.
La Homa Rd and 66th St lie in a semi-rural stretch of Hidalgo County where residential traffic intersects with fast-moving commuter routes. While the exact conditions at the time of the crash are still under review, rollover accidents—such as the one experienced by the GMC—frequently lead to severe trauma, particularly when utility poles or fixed objects are involved.
Teen drivers are at higher risk in these types of situations due to their limited driving experience and the difficulty of reacting quickly under pressure. The tragic loss of 17-year-old Latwon Oscar Uribe is a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact such incidents have on families and communities.
In the wake of a fatal crash, families are left not only with grief but also with difficult decisions regarding investigations, insurance, and long-term support. It’s essential that they have access to compassionate guidance and clear information as they begin to navigate the aftermath.
