Montgomery, AL (August 18, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle collision in Dale County claimed the life of an 81-year-old Troy man and left another driver injured Saturday on U.S. Highway 231 near Ariton, according to officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
The crash occurred when Carroll Grant Hughes’s vehicle collided with a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer along a stretch of US 231. Hughes, 81, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the driver of the tractor-trailer was also hurt in the impact and was transported to Dale Medical Center in Ozark for further medical care.
The collision prompted an immediate response from law enforcement and emergency medical teams. First responders worked to assist the injured truck driver and secure the area while ALEA initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. No further information about the events leading up to the collision or the conditions of the road at the time have been released.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to review all factors surrounding the crash, including whether speed, visibility, driver condition, or vehicle malfunction contributed to the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Carroll Grant Hughes during this difficult time. Our thoughts are also with the injured truck driver and we wish them a full recovery.
Truck Collisions on Alabama Highways
Tractor-trailer accidents, like the one on U.S. 231 in Dale County, are tragically common on Alabama’s rural and intercity highways. With commercial vehicles accounting for a significant portion of traffic on U.S. routes, crashes between large trucks and passenger vehicles often result in catastrophic outcomes due to the sheer difference in size and impact force.
In this case, the loss of 81-year-old Carroll Grant Hughes serves as a painful reminder of how deadly these collisions can be. Even with proper safety measures, passenger vehicles are often no match for the momentum and weight of tractor-trailers. For drivers on routes like US 231—which runs through heavily traveled rural areas—vigilance and caution remain critical at all times.
The driver of the Freightliner also suffered injuries and was transported to Dale Medical Center. Such outcomes emphasize the physical risks faced by all parties involved in truck crashes, not just those in smaller vehicles. Long-term medical care and support may be required, particularly when trauma or internal injuries are present.
ALEA’s continued investigation into this case will be key to understanding what went wrong and whether additional safety protocols could have made a difference. As Alabama continues to focus on roadway safety, particularly in high-speed rural areas, this incident reinforces the need for better awareness, enforcement, and infrastructure to protect all road users.
