Moorhead, MN (September 24, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash in Clay County left three people injured Wednesday morning after a Ford Fusion and GMC Yukon collided at the intersection of Highway 75 and 28th Ave N in Oakport Township.
The crash occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. when the southbound Ford Fusion attempted to turn east onto 28th Ave N and collided with a northbound GMC Yukon. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and airbags deployed on impact.
Emergency responders from Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Moorhead Police, and Moorhead Fire arrived promptly to provide aid. Paramedics transported all three individuals involved to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment.
The driver of the Ford Fusion, 28-year-old Callie Jo Folstrom of St. Paul, sustained life-threatening injuries despite wearing a seat belt. The driver of the GMC Yukon, 41-year-old Tyler William Kirchner of Reiles Acres, ND, and his 14-year-old passenger were both treated for non-life-threatening injuries. All occupants were confirmed to be wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Authorities closed portions of the roadway temporarily while the scene was cleared and an investigation was conducted. Road conditions were reported as dry at the time of the collision.
Our thoughts are with Ms. Folstrom, Mr. Kirchner, and the teenage passenger as they recover from this devastating crash.
Two-Vehicle Collisions in Minnesota
The crash at Highway 75 and 28th Ave N underscores the dangers present at intersections, particularly those along high-speed roadways in Minnesota. Left-turn collisions, such as this incident, are among the most common types of serious crashes, often resulting in significant injuries due to the angle and force of impact.
Highway 75 is a major north-south corridor through Clay County, carrying both commuter and commercial traffic. With frequent cross-streets and turning vehicles, this corridor has a history of severe crashes—especially during peak morning hours.
Even when all safety measures are followed, including seat belt use and sober driving, intersection collisions can still result in devastating consequences. In this case, the quick response of Moorhead Police, Fire, and EMS ensured that those injured received immediate medical attention, but the long-term recovery process remains uncertain for the victims.
Victims of intersection crashes often face extended hospital stays, rehabilitation, and significant financial challenges from medical expenses and lost wages. For families, the emotional impact of a loved one’s injury can be just as severe.
